John Dunning: Making Globalisation Good
The definitive version of this review article is forthcoming in Volume 15 of “Islam and
Christian-Muslim Relations”. Any citation ought to be made from the published version
rather than from this one on WFDD’s website. This important book is about reforming
the global economic system rather than replacing it;
and it is reform with a decidedly moral flavour. To read the full review please click on the title above...
Ed. Paul Knitter and Chandra Muzaffar: Subverting Greed
This is a series of easily read and challenging essays by
a distinguished array of scholar-practitioners from the Igbo and African
religious perspective, an Eastern perspective on sociospiritual activism
and from the Buddhist, Confucian, Jewish, Christian and Muslim traditions.
Each of the authors gives his/her religious tradition’s critique of the
present economic order, its understanding of economic theory, its economic
record and its potential for making distinctive contributions to global economic
justice. The editors, a Roman Catholic and a Muslim, are hoping that Subverting
Greed will provide an ethical compass based on multi-religious insights that
will stimulate dialogue, especially in the college classroom.
WFDD would add that for those people from religious
communities who are uneasy about present trends in globalisation and the
development model, the book will be an invaluable source of inspiration
and sound arguments. As the writer of the preface points out, it gives
a much-needed counterweight to traditional economic texts that are sometimes
blind to the human dimension hidden beneath theories and formulas.
